IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE MASTERS

Vacuum is the second studio album by The Watch and was released in 2004 on the independent Lizard Music label with a renewed line up featuring Simone Rossetti (vocals, flute, tambou), Roberto Leoni (drums, percussion), Gabriele Manzini (keyboards, synthesizers), Ettore Salati (guitars), Sergio Taglioni (piano, organ, Moog, Mellotron, synthesizers) and Marco Schembri (bass, guitars). Genesis from the early seventies are still the main source of inspiration and the band demonstrates not only to have studied their style in depth but to have absorbed it and, in some ways, made it their own...

The opener, “Hills”, is just a short introduction that depicts a mysterious, peaceful place in the dark surrounded by distant traffic lights. All around little shining cars seem dancing like dolphins in the sea. It's a secret time...

Then, in “Damage Mode” the music and lyrics evoke a young man recalling a youthful trauma. He can't deny the anger and hatred toward the man who caused it. In his mind, he sees the images of a film where the female protagonist is ready to run to escape the attack of a lion that wants to devour her...

“Wonderland” paints a beautiful city full of lights and signs. It's a world that invites you to spend your money with the illusion of achieving happiness through parties and slot machines, easy women and alcohol. But all this is just an illusion and isn't enough to hide the inner emptiness of those who allow themselves to be seduced by the sirens of a merciless consumerism...

the Watch, 2004

“Shining Bald Heads” describes a strange character, someone who appears like a rainbow when your day seems over: Mr. Doubt. During the day, his bald head shines in the suburbs and outlying neighbourhoods, but when the workday ends he reappears with his claws planted in your dreams. He's a sign of life and sometimes it would be better to heed his friendly advice...

“Out Of The Land” tells of the solitude and peace one can experience in a small town far from the hectic life of big cities, and of the strange and contradictory feelings experienced by those who leave the chaos of a metropolis to take refuge in the tranquillity of a distant and all-too-silent place...

“Goddess” depicts the image of a man singing the praises of his beloved, a woman who for him is a true goddess to be adored and loved blindly and unconditionally, and without whom his life risks losing all meaning...

“Deeper Still” is a lullaby for a child born on a cold winter morning. White snow falls on the newborn troubled life while his future is taking form. The parents sense a kind of passing of the baton in the relay race of life. The prevailing feeling is small and fragile: it's simply love...

The long, complex title track, “The Vacuum”, is a suite divided into five parts that was inspired by the character of Serge Abrahamovitch Voronoff Voronoff, a French surgeon of Russian origin working in the 1920s and 1930s best known for his practice of transplantation of living cells, tissues and organs from animals monkeys to men to increase sexual power and as an anti-ageing therapy. The piece opens with the excerpt from the report of a patrol of the French Gendarmerie. A strange creature was seen running outside Voronff's castle, near the border with the Italian town of Ventimiglia. The piece continues with excerpts from Voronoff's diary, which address the ethical implications of the scientist's work. The third part is a surreal exposition of the creature's sensations. The fourth part contains a warning about the excesses of experimentation: those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones! The fifth and final part features the creature's discovery in a pool of dreams...

On the whole, a very good work in pure Genesis style!

INSPIRING PEACE

Corporesano took form in Brescia in 2015 and soon started composing original music inspired by seventies prog. In 2019 they released an interesting eponymous debut album on the Mellow Records label with a line up featuring Lorenzo Ussoli (keyboards, backing vocals), Francesco Marchina Ares (lead and backing vocals), Simone Sandrini (guitars), Giordano Porta (bass) and Marco Dolfini (drums, percussion, backing vocals). Their music is dreamy, soft and pleasant though not particularly challenging. The art work by Giordano Porta, inspired by the fantastic landscapes by Roger Dean, tries to describe the musical and lyrical content...

The opener “Alle porte di Zion” (At the gates of Zion) is a slow, reflective piece that evokes the end of a man's earthly journey at the gates of Zion and his liberation from pain, which leads to a state of infinite peace. It's an ideal place, where you can listen to music while sitting on green meadows and get lost in a deep sense of well-being surrounded by a flow of transforming souls...

“Labirinti retorici” (Rhetorical labyrinths) is an introspective and dreamy piece where music and lyrics evoke the figure of a man in search of inspiration, lost chasing his fantasies through the alleys of an ancient city or in splendid gardens (the lyrics refer to the Boboli Gardens in Florence, a large park originally designed as the garden of the Medici family's Pitti Palace in the mid-16th century that houses statues of various styles and periods, large fountains, and artificial grottoes). Then, the protagonist finds himself composing melodies on the beach in Rimini, applauded only by dolphins. Useless thoughts are dispersed by a wind that carries with it the voices of insensitive sirens...

“Nel bozzolo” (In the cocoon) tells the story of a man who can't find his place in a shattered, hopeless world and withdraws into himself. He seeks protection in a cocoon where he can sleep and dream. Upon awakening, however, a metamorphosis occurs: the cocoon opens, and the protagonist soars like a butterfly, reflecting on his past and trying to savour the nectar of life, leaving behind the shards of his shell...

Corporesano, 2018

“Statim vivus fierem” (I would immediately become alive) is an introspective piece, titled in Latin, that speaks of the need for reconciliation between humanity and nature. Under a starry sky in the Taiga, the protagonist experiences visions that blur with reality. In that place, he feels part of an ancestral history and in balance with the universe...

“Sulle rive del fiume Giordano” (On the banks of the Jordan river) describes a traveller sitting in silence on the banks of the Jordan river, a river that flows through the tormented lands of the Middle East and ends into the Dead Sea. The protagonist dives into its waters, and when he resurfaces, time and space lose all meaning for him. He experiences an angelic peace and is overcome by celestial visions...

“Lupo solitario” (Lone wolf) describes a man with a rebellious spirit who reflects on his past and his mistakes. Now he realises that he must move forward with humility and courage, without heeding siren songs that might divert his path. For him it's time to start over and make sense of his new role as a father, with transparency and honesty...

In “Onda inarrestabile” (Unstoppable wave) the music and lyrics evoke a powerful wave, capable of tuning cells, causing chaos, and instilling vibrations, vertigo and happiness. The lyrics were partially inspired by The Sirius Mystery, a book by Robert K. G. Temple supporting the pseudoscientific ancient astronauts hypothesis that intelligent extra-terrestrial beings visited the Earth and made contact with humans in antiquity and prehistoric times...

“La zavorra inutile” (The useless ballast) evokes the image of a man crushed by an unbearable weight. What weighs him down is anxiety about the future and regrets about a past that can never return. To move forward, he clings to the habits, judgments, and clichés that give him security. When a memory of childhood games timidly surfaces, however, the protagonist senses that within him there is still a great life force and an ocean of energy. He regains his balance and forgets the fears of the future and the regrets of the past to live in the flow of the present, the only true aspect of reality...

“Lo spirito della montagna” (The spirit of the mountain) describes the strength and beauty of nature by identifying with the benign spirit of a mountain that teaches us to honour life. The spirt bestows peace, silence, and serenity upon those who appreciate it and its magical songs resonate throughout the valley, bringing joy to those who listen...

The closing track, “I venti dell'inverno” (The winds of Winter), is a piece suspended between nostalgia and hope for the future. The protagonist turns his thoughts to a past love, hoping that the sweet moments they shared will return. He feels almost swallowed up in a dark vortex where icy winds blow. Then, he becomes aware of the need to overcome the past and look to the future with confidence. New encounters and new ideas can still shape a new path in his life...

On the whole, a really good work that deserves listening to. Unfortunately the band split up soon after the album was released, but you never know. In Italian prog reunions can always happen.

Corporesano: Corporesano (2019). Other opinions:
Jim Russell: Listening to Corporesano is the chance to let your mind wander and drift off to a sound that will never jar you or disturb you. The speed of the songs is nearly constant and slow, the template consistent, the verses leading to the payoff electric guitar solo, very melodic, over a surrounding atmosphere that is the aural equivalent of the beautiful skyline colors shown in the background of their cover art. They take you there as efficiently as any band ever has, and, if you dig it, this album could end up on your "favorites" shelf. So, why the long face, Jim? Well, every positive attribute I just laid out for you is also, ironically, the same criticism that many an RPI fan will have with this album. If you need your music to be adventurous or take risks---even occasionally, even a little bit---to provide some contrasting mood or excitement, you'll need to look elsewhere. That's why I would describe this as a kind of lovely daydream, like a perfect nap that delivered a really good dream. It's nice, but for adventurous listeners, I doubt that's enough... STRANGE WAVES

Live: Waves From the Underground is the ninth studio album by Daal and was released in 2025 on the independent Ma.Ra.Cash Records label. Despite the title, it’s not a live album but the fruit of three days of jam sessions that took place in Rome during October 2023. During those days the band featuring Alfio Costa (Mellotron, MiniMoog, PolyMoog, Rhodes piano, Hammond organ, synthesizers), Davide Guidoni (drums, percussion), Ettore Salati (guitars) and Roberto “Bobo” Aiolfi (bass) the band was particularly inspired and productive, so much so that they decided to select the best moments from the jam sessions and rework them, giving them a more definite shape and meaning. Anyway, the artwork seems to suggest a rather dark atmosphere...

Almost all the individual tracks are identified by a date and a location derived from geographical coordinates. The first, “W.F.T.U. 09.03.2020 (45°41'42''N 9°40'12''E)”, takes us to Bergamo during the sad days of the raging COVID-19 pandemic, when the number of victims was so high that military vehicles were required to transport the bodies and incinerate them. The images of those events, broadcast by the media, are etched in the memory of all Italians and it's not by chance that the music here is so sinister and disturbing...

The following “W.F.T.U. 15.09.2008 (51°30'N 0°11'W)” takes us to Kensington, London, on the day of Richard Wright's death, to whom the piece is dedicated. On the same day, Lehman Brothers (the fourth-largest U.S. investment bank) went bankrupt in New York, and soon the streets of London would be invaded by protests over the Wall Street Crisis, but this is another story... Her you have a slow pace, melancholy atmospheres, and Gilmour-esque guitar sounds for a requiem in honour of the Pink Floyd keyboardist, an artist who, with his talent, opened new paths to travel to the far side of the moon...

W.F.T.U. 26.04.1986 (51°23'21.98''N 30°05'57.01''E)” takes us to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant at the moment of the explosion of reactor No. 4. The tragic consequences of the episode are well known. In the background, a female voice can be heard speaking in Russian, while percussion instruments and strange sound effects convey a strong sense of anguish. A warning about the mistakes of the past and the dangers of the present...

Daeconstruction Brain Melody” is a brilliant new interpretation of a piece that appeared on the band's debut album from 2009, Disorcanicorigami. Compared to the original, it lacks the unsettling power of Alessandro Papotto's sax, but its absence is compensated by the excellent guitar work...

W.F.T.U. 20.07.1969 (8°30'N 31°24'E)” takes us to South Sudan on the day a human being walked on the Moon for the first time. The rarefied atmospheres of space soon give way to ethnic influences reminiscent of caravan journeys through the desert: two different types of desert to explore. What emerges is the contrast between humanity's ambition to explore space and its inability to focus on the desolate realities of Earth, forgotten because they hold no interest...

Daeconstruction Decalogue Part 1” is the reinterpretation of a piece from the 2018 album Decalogue of Darkness. Back in 2018 the band shot a video for it: the video features the images of some monks attempting to defeat the devil, followed by rides of witches, dark Sabbaths and satanic rituals. Well, this new version captures the atmosphere of the original perfectly...

W.F.T.U. 01.09.1928 (51°31'2'N 0°10'23'W)” is a long piece with a dreamy and relaxed atmosphere, but not without rhythmic and melodic surprises, that takes us to St. Mary's Hospital in London at the time when the Scottish doctor Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. Regarding his discovery, later Dr. Fleming stated: "One sometimes finds what one is not looking for. When I woke up just after dawn on September 28, 1928, I certainly didn't plan to revolutionise all medicine by discovering the world's first antibiotic, or bacteria killer. But I suppose that was exactly what I did..."...

W.F.T.U. 02.06.1946 (41°53'35'N 12°28'58'E)” takes us to Italy on the day the Italian Republic was founded. From the Tyrrhenian Sea, we can admire the coast of a country at the dawn of a new era, a country eager to leave behind the burdensome legacy of monarchy and fascism and turn the page. Drum rolls and a disquieting opening reminiscent of Goblins in Deep Red seem to suggest that this day of celebration is only the beginning of a long and challenging journey...

The last track, “W.F.T.U. 25.07.1943 (41°53'46.32''N 12°28'53.4''E)”, takes us to Rome on the day of the fall of fascism. World War II was still raging, but the piece's solemn pace seems to suggest feelings of hope, resilience, and faith in the future...

On the whole, an interesting and challenging album that need its time to be fully appreciated but that will reward you in the end.

PURE GENESIS STYLE

Hailing from Milan, The Watch came to life in 2000 from the ashes of another band called The Night Watch. In fact, when the members of The Night Watch parted ways vocalist Simone Rossetti did not give up and gathered around him a brand new group of musicians to play Genesis covers and some original tracks in the same style. In 2001 the new band released an interesting debut album on the independent Lizard Records label with a line up featuring Simone Rossetti (vocals, flute, tambou), Simone Stucchi (programming), Roberto Leoni (drums, percussion), Gabriele Manzini (keyboards), Valerio Vado (electric and acoustic guitar) and Marco Schembri (bass, acoustic guitar) plus Sergio Taglioni (piano, organ, Moog, synthesizers) and Gino Menichini (additional keyboards). The music is in pure Genesis style, yet not without a personal touch. The artwork is taken from an old architecture printing, Prospettiva of Vignola, 1642...

The opener “DNAlien” is a piece about the risks of technology and the consequences that can befall humanity if people choose the most convenient, seemingly safe, path to fulfil their desires. The prevalence of aesthetics over the substance of things and feelings can lead to alienation, just as the prevalence of silence over words...

“The Ghost And The Teenager” is not a Gothic tale but a piece dealing with the unstoppable tendency of teenagers to get into trouble by following bad advice, such as drunk driving. In this case, the ghost is the bad advisor lurking in the depths of the mind of a teenager seeking reckless thrills, with all the dangers that come with them...

“Heroes” is the caustic portrait of a cynical, vain rock star who acts like an Olympian deity on stage, smiling at journalists and audiences, convinced he was chosen by God among all men to play his role... The next track, “Moving Red”, is a surreal description of a frenetic bus ride with a nightmarish atmosphere. Eventually the protagonist arrives in a town. Now he's under the spotlights to put on a show that captivates the audience. But if harmony and balance aren't strong enough the result could be a mess...

The short and melancholic “Riding The Elephant” contains a pinch of electronics and paints, albeit with somewhat hermetic tones, the figure of a young woman who manages to hide her wounds from the eyes of the people and to overcome a traumatic and difficult family situation by hiding her shyness with bold looks...

The final track, “...And The Winner Is...”, is a long piece in pastel shades where old, dusty, cobweb-filled canvases describe the passage of time and the complexity of human actions, which accumulate to form a surreal and enchanted landscape. The waves of time, with years and years of accumulated life and experiences, sculpt forms and feelings, years and years serving to shape the secret of human nature. The charm of a mysterious woman or that of a city derives from the intensity of overlapping and intersecting experiences. In the background, the city of Venice is dying, swallowed up by canals of wine and slowly succumbing to the unstoppable wear and tear of its houses built on poisonous pylons, following the rhythm of the tides...

On the whole, a perfect exercise of style that deserves its place in a prog collection.

OF MUSIC AND WIND

Mutazione is the second full length album by Forza Elettro Motrice (F.E.M.), a band from Meda, Lombardy. It was self-released in 2018 with a renewed line up featuring Alessandro Graziano (vocals, violin), Alberto Citterio (keyboards), Paolo Colombo (electric guitar), Marco Buzzi (bass), Pietro Bertoni (trumpet, trombone, euphonium, glockenspiel) and Emanuele Borsati (drums, marimba, percussion, acoustic guitar). The new vocalist is up to the task and the band confirms to have excellent song-writing skills and great musicianship. The result of their work is an interesting concept album about the end of a love and the necessity of change that could recall in some way La Torre dell'Alchimista's Neo and I'm sure that Italianprog lovers will appreciate it.

The opening track, “Il palazzo del chaos” (The Palace of Chaos), is just a short instrumental introduction that leads to the following “Io mi trasformo” (I'm Changing), a wonderful piece about the need to continuously adapt to the constant changes that life throws at us. The music and lyrics evoke the image of the protagonist walking along a path aimlessly, lost in his thoughts. At a certain point, as everything around him changes, the protagonist questions his true essence. He becomes aware he’s changing instinctively, almost without realising it, just as the world around him constantly transforms. The protagonist understands that he must always act and change, transforming himself to become what he really wants. So, he becomes music...

La cura delle cose” (The care of things) is a bittersweet reflection about how time can change a relationship if you don’t pay attention to your partner. What we don’t take care of it is destined to get lost and this is true in every aspect of our lives. It is also true in love, it is a constant of life. Here the protagonist becomes aware of a relationship that is fading out and that we are nothing but the time we give to ourselves...

The title of the following “Musica di vento” (Music of wind) is a pun that means in the meantime Music of wind and I become music. This track is a slow, dreamy ballad about the need to write music and lyrics, expressing oneself through sounds and words to those who care to listen to. The piece opens with the notes of a piano, then the narrator explains that his songs are born without any self-awareness, simply from the desire and pleasure of writing and singing, a magic of thoughts full of meaning for those who can appreciate them. But once written, these songs have a life of their own, independent of the author. Who will listen to?

Mai tardi” (Never late) is a great instrumental track with some funky-jazz passages and various changes of atmosphere. Then it’s the turn of “Il cielo di sè” (The sky of our ego), a beautiful piece, complex and heartfelt, describing the emotional turmoil and uncertainty surrounding the end of a relationship. The protagonist is alone under a cobalt-blue sky and he almost seems like a veil ready to be blown away by the wind. The piece begins with a strummed acoustic guitar part, then the music and lyrics take unexpected paths. It's the beginning of an inner journey, with thoughts tangled in nests of wind. Disappointments are like stones, but in the protagonist's head there's a thin rainbow calling him and inviting him to continue his journey...

Attesa” (Waiting) is a short, melancholic and dreamy piece for solo piano, violin, and vocals. The music and lyrics evoke the furrows that time carves into the protagonist's soul, sowing a dark and tormented wait. The wait for a return to normality. Then it’s the turn of the brilliant instrumental piece, “Mutazione” (Mutation) which at times reminds me of Le Orme and marks the change in the protagonist...

The long, complex Se c’è una buona ragione” (If there’s a good reason) closes the album. It begins with three minutes of sustained rhythm tinged with electronica and a disorienting, filtered and distorted voice. The piece then evolves in other directions, leading to a finale that speaks to the wind and recalls King Crimson. The lyrics poetically reiterate the concept of the need for change and evolution, even in personal relationships. Change is the future that looms and calls for itself, and it shouldn't be feared. If there's a good reason, change is necessary, even if it means breaking up with your partner and ending a relationship. For the protagonist, the time has come to accept change and move on without worrying about the end of a love that still struggles to fade. The return to reality is marked by the "voice" of a ticket machine...

On the whole, a wonderful work, even if it needs reiterate spins and the comprehension of the lyrics to be fully appreciated.

A MYSTERIOUS LETTER

Vespro is the third full length album by Mysteria Noctis and was self-released in 2025 with a confirmed line up featuring Alberto Negretti (vocals), Alessio Negretti (guitars), Giacomo Piccinini (drums), Gioele D'Adda (bass) and Mattia Di Lorenzo (keyboards). It marks another step forward for the band, the musical fabric is very rich and variegated blending progressive rock with touches of electronica, synthwave, rap and black metal. According to an interview with the band, “Vespro is a concept album that tells the story of a man who, driven by an anonymous letter, sets out to find the sender. along the way, he embarks on a journey that forces him to confront his past. The central theme driving the entire story is that of choices and their consequences…”. (You can read the complete interview HERE). The art cover by Giacomo Tagnin gives a visual form to the atmospheres of the album...

The opener “Ombre dal passato” (Shadows from the past) sets the atmosphere. An acoustic guitar intro and a tormented voice open the album evoking a trembling hand writing a letter full of poisonous questions, addressed to a man who has changed over the years and seems to have forgotten his past. When the rhythm increases the image and perspective change. Night falls and the voice of the person who received the letter can be heard. The evil evoked by the sender envelops the protagonist like a shadow that takes his breath away. The journey in search of the mysterious sender begins, and the departure is described by the following short instrumental “Discesa” (Descent)...

Anatema” (Anathema), on an apparently cheerful rhythm with echoes of eighties synthwave, describes the torment of the protagonist, visibly shaken by the mysterious call from his past and the shadows it evokes. The protagonist questions himself and questions his glass muse (a sort of woman-city metaphor of his present) on the opportunity to leave and begin a dangerous journey. The need to leave becomes more and more pressing, even if the response of the glass muse is extremely disturbing, a dark omen of perpetual damnation where the synth-wave echoes veer towards black metal hints...

Ritorno” (Return) paints in music and words the protagonist who, alone and lost, travels along the traces of his past. Faces hidden in the fog watch him and hide the identity of the mysterious author of the letter. Afflicted by too many unanswered questions, by the memory of broken dreams, sacrifices and abandonments on the roads of his past, the protagonist goes on and on with many doubts but without fear...

A delicate piano passage introduces the following “Valzer d’inverno” (Winter waltz), a piece that describes the passion of a brief and intense relationship, a romance with a woman soon forgotten by the protagonist, a woman among many. What remains of that love story? The flames of passion have now given way to ashes and disenchantment, to broken dreams and broken promises, deceptions and betrayal. What remains is just a face that fades into the fog and perhaps a veil of nostalgia and regret...

Ricordi?” (Do you remember?) begins with a short drum passage. It is a caustic piece that evokes the anger of a forgotten friend and rival of the protagonist in the race for success. A friend that the protagonist has ruined and humiliated. A sacrificial victim who has developed a deep hatred towards him. The meeting with his shadow is another ominous omen about the end of the journey that the protagonist has undertaken...

Il processo” (The trial) opens with a slow and mournful marching pace. A hostile voice introduces the trial and invites the accused to face the charges. A rapped vocal part summarizes the accusations and invites the protagonist to look at that betrayed and forgotten woman who now takes care of her (and his) son and at the trampled and humiliated rival. The price of success is damnation, the verdict is one of condemnation. But the author of the letter is not among the jurors. He is still waiting for the protagonist at the pass...

Mysteria Noctis, 2025

The long, complex “La villa” (The villa) tells of the end of the journey. In fact, the journey ends in a dark and remote villa, the tomb of an unforgiving past. The piece opens with strong classical influences and then turns to threatening, heavy atmospheres. Growling, rap, operatic and theatrical voices combine to describe the scenes of an inner hell where you can find resentment and repentance. The protagonist feels that he is not alone in the villa but is welcomed only by dark presences. Four rooms are open. In one he sees the woman he left pregnant with his child, the woman he abandoned, in another room there’s an innocent man who ended up in jail because of him, in the third a neglected friend who hanged himself while he was having fun at a party. In each room screams and damnation. In the last one the author of the letter awaits him...

The disquieting “L’ultima porta” (The last door) describes the protagonist ready to cross the last door and meet his fate. Of all the shadows, that of the author of the letter is the most feared. In the end, the most feared shadow turns out to be that of his soul. Now the protagonist understands that he is the monster who caused so much pain and inside a mirror he sees his soul dying. All the lights go out, between fear and remorse. It is his soul that wrote the letter, it is his hand. The man the protagonist was looking for is none other than himself. But when the final credits roll, the protagonist can still choose between forgiveness and oblivion...

The last track, “L’ombra” (The shadow), opens with powerful electric guitar riffs and a fast pace. The protagonist’s hand still trembles as he writes the final words of a farewell to himself. He realizes he is the monster and condemns himself to death. Perhaps there is another path of penance and forgiveness, but will forgiveness be enough to save him from himself? The conclusion is left to the listener. The night falls among the shadows of the past and an ink-stained letter...

On the whole, a very good work that deserves a try.

BEES AND FEARS

Vulnera, the second full length album by Mysteria Noctis, was released in 2020 with a renewed line up featuring Alberto Negretti (vocals), Alessio Negretti (guitars), Giacomo Piccinini (drums), Gioele D'Adda (bass) and Mattia Di Lorenzo (keyboards) plus the guest vocalists Eleonora Ferrari, Vittorio Iannaco and KDone. It confirms the departure from the decidedly black metal sound of the debut work offering a music style difficult to pigeonhole. Throughout the album you can find metal passages alternating with melodic sections and a prog rock veined with touches of electronic music and classical influences. The music and lyrics try to reflect anxiety and restlessness: in fact, according to the band, the protagonist of this work is the man, caught in an intimate and at times desperate search for himself who inevitably clashes with his fragility and helplessness...

The opener “Am I Here?” refers to the art cover and evokes bees all around and inside the head of the protagonist. It’s a piece expressing a strong sense of bewilderment... Then it’s the turn of “Thoughts”, a piece that expresses an inner search that remains unsatisfied. Next comes the nightmarish “A Supplication”, a long, complex track where the protagonist is on his knees in front of a jury, put on a hopeless trial leading him to the death penalty...

On “Ultimo canto” (Last singing) the rhythm slackens and the vocals turn from English to Italian. It’s a touching ballad about love and death featuring a guest female vocalist who duets with the band’s singer. The music and lyrics conjure up a spectral atmosphere as the protagonist answers the irresistible call of the Grim Reaper without fear...

On the following “Night Light” the rhythm rises again bringing demons and fears for an infernal ride into the night. This song is sung in English while for the next one, the melodic “Nell’anima” (In the soul), the band chose again their mother language to express the heat of an inner fire that burns inside the soul and makes the protagonist look up at the sky to overcome a sense of obscure, thundering solitude and uneasiness...

The last track, “Red Sea”, is the most ambitious of the album and the most accomplished of the lot. According to the band, this composition was inspired by the classical form of the sonata and features some guest vocalists. Eventually it brings a pinch of optimism and some rays of light after the previous dark atmospheres. The journey comes to an end as the protagonist wakes up under a new sun...

On the whole, an interesting work that deserves a try.

DIMENSIONS AND TRUTH

Mysteria Noctis came to life in Como in 2011 on the initiative of Alessio Negretti, Alberto Negretti and Giacomo Piccinini, inspired by bands such as Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater. After a long time spent in the rehearsal room and a good live activity on the local scene, in 2015 they self-produced and released a debut full length album entitled Higher Dimensions with a line up featuring Alberto Negretti (vocals), Alessio Negretti (guitars), Matteo Menafro (keyboards), Pietro Francoli (bass) and Giacomo Piccinini (drums).

It’s a still immature work where death and black metal sounds prevail although the band try to blend them with many other different influences, from jazz to prog. Wild, raw sections characterized by growl and screamed voices alternate with calmer acoustic passages and symphonic digressions throughout the five long tracks of the album. “Decadence”, “Cry Of The Ocean”, “Iter Mentis In Deum”, “Logos” and “Of Flames And Eternity” give life to a kind of suite full of interesting ideas, although not always musically coherent. Nonetheless, for the band this was just the starting point...

************

The follow up of Mysteria Noctis’ debut album is Quid est veritas?, an EP that was released in 2017. It represents a step forward and an important change of direction in the style of the band when compared with the previous work from 2015. It was released on the independent Areasonica Records label with a confirmed line up featuring Alberto Negretti (vocals), Alessio Negretti (guitars), Matteo Menafro (keyboards), Pietro Francoli (bass) and Giacomo Piccinini (drums). Here the musicians leave back most of their death and black metal influences in the search for a more personal style. According to the band, this work is focused on the search for Truth, in the deepest and most absolute sense of the term. It’s the human journey towards the light that drives away the unknown, a path that tries to get closer to knowledge but is strewn with obstacles and rarely reaches a definitive conclusion in the span of a single lifetime.

The title track is a long suite sung in Italian (despite the title being in Latin) for which the band also shot a video directed by Simone Sacchi. It depicts the regrets that emerge from foggy memories and from the ashes of an arrogant ego obsessed with knowledge and blinded by greed. But the truth is that a man will never understand the nature of what lies behind the veil of the senses...

The second and last track, the lively “Swinging Mind”, is shorter and is sung in English. In the own words of the band, two progressive rock songs with two different perspectives, different styles that manage to complete a story by making the most of the combination of the tension and restlessness that form the background to the first song and the pinch of madness and instability that unfold during the second...

BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON

Spectrvm come from Cantù, a town in the province of Como, and their roots date back to 1974 when they took form under the name of Stratus. The first incarnation of the band was active until 1982 but never had the chance to release an album. In 2020, after a long period of hibernation, they came back to life with a new name and a renewed line up featuring Frank Lazzari (vocals, organ, keyboards), Jordan Bozzolan (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Daniele Bozzolan (bass, piano, backing vocals) and Marco Brega (guitars, backing vocals) plus the guest Renato Olivo (vocals, guitar). After a meticulous work in the recording studio, in 2023 they finally released their debut album, entitled Teschio del mondo, on the Terzo Millennio Records label. It’s an interesting work with a strong emphasis on melody that sometimes could recall bands such as Latte e Miele, La Corte dei Miracoli or La Bottega dell’Arte...

The opener “Anima” (Soul), alternates frenetic sections and reflective passages with beautiful melodic lines and harmony vocals that could recall New Trolls or Pooh. According to the liner notes, it tells in music and words of an inner journey into the depth of human nature with its fragilities and fears. The lyrics evoke sounds of silence carried by the wind and the image of a man who takes his soul in his hands. It’s a silver soul, a globe of light. At the end a friendly hand appears that helps him overcome his personal crisis...

Bestia” (Beast) starts by an evocative organ solo and alternates melodic vocals to more aggressive passages (the short instrumental middle section, in fact, could recall Deep Purple). The lyrics describe a strange dream in which an ominous beast weaves a net and waits at the end of the road for his prey. The beast is a metaphor that symbolizes problems like drug addiction, mental illness, a nervous breakdown or a sudden lack of money...

Nessuno piange, nessuno canta” (No one cries, no one sings) is a long, complex piece that tells the story of a pet dog that during a windy night escapes from the garden of a sad house in the suburbs. But life in a big city is very hard. The puppy is lonely and scared as he wonders through spectral streets, drunk on sounds, whipped by threatening lights, spied on by hostile eyes. He keeps on running, hunted down by kicks and noises, he’s exhausted, but when his heart is about to break a door opens. The ending of the story is up to you...

The funny “Sogni di pietra” (Dreams of stone) is a nice piece that describes the dreams of a stone longing for a more interesting life. It’s a metaphorical way to depict the feelings of someone who can’t change the rhythm of his life and whose days are all the same, all life long. Same horizon, same sun and moon, same view, same routine. For eternity...

The title track, Teschio del mondo (Skull of the world) is a short, visionary song that evokes dark thoughts and new expectations. The title refers to the image of the moon reflecting light in a dark, cloudless sky. The night comes wearing its black cloak and the moon looks like a skull. It’s the time when the spiders feed on their preys and the protagonist look at the sky in a hallucinatory way. In the dark someone steals, some other kills, others cry for help. The sun will come like a burning blade to bring back warmth and hope...

Crisalide” (Chrysalis) is an excellent piece that tells in music and words of a metamorphosis. The dream of a new day and of a body that is going to change, the chrysalis slowly turns into a colourful butterfly, ready to take off with into sky. The chrysalis is still dreaming of its new life, a rebirth and a leap into the unknown, full of dangers like cobwebs or man and his madness. A lightning bolt or a flame could burn the butterfly that now dives into eternity...

Prigione” (Prison) is a piece that expresses amazement and bewilderment. According to the liner notes, it is a tribute to the Seventies and to the psychiatric reform wanted by Franco Basaglia. This piece tells about the exit of a mentally ill person from his room and the eve of his return to the real world after years of isolation. Words and music try to express the feelings of the protagonist...

The last piece, “Templum” (Temple) is sung in Latin and wants to convey an atmosphere of mystic mystery. In fact, the short lyrics are the motto of the Knights Templar, a French military order of the Catholic faith that was founded 1118 to defend pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem and existed for nearly two centuries during the Middle Ages. Non nobis Domine, non nobis, sed nomini tuo da Gloriam can be translated as Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory...

On the whole, a very good work that deserves a try.

OF CARTOONS AND OTHER STORIES

Tangle took form in 2019 in Bergamo with the aim of experimenting with new sounds drawing inspiration from jazz rock, fusion, prog rock and artists such as Porcupine Tree, Plini or The Aristocrats. The name of the band refers to their compositional style in which they blend many genres to play a music that, in their own words, is rich in variations, dynamic excursions and tempo changes. After a good live activity on the local scene, in 2023 they self-released an interesting debut album, entitled Entangled, with a line up featuring Fulvio Marcarini (guitar), Manuele Mariani (bass), Francesco Locatelli (keyboards, synthesizers) and Matteo Locati (drums). It’s a completely instrumental work that tries to evoke images, suggestions or stories in the listener and the art cover gives an idea of the musical content...

The beautiful opener “Splash” begins with a slow pace and a dark, threatening atmosphere that might recall Goblin’s Profondo Rosso but after a couple of minutes the deep red colour turns into pink giving room to a section that reminds me of panther walking out from a cartoon on the notes of famous theme by Henry Mancini. Then it’s the turn of a rock part with the electric guitar in the forefront before pulsing bass lines and powerful organ waves take the lead for a vibrant finale...

The frenzied “Chronicles Of A Chicken Thief” is a short piece that might recall bands such as Calibro 35 or La Batteria and the soundtracks of poliziotteschi films, a subgenre of crime and action films that was very popular in Italy in the seventies, full of scenes of car chases and bloody shootings...

The mysterious “Arrakis” features Eastern influences and is named after a fictional desert planet featured in the Dune series of novels by Frank Herbert. The music seems to invite you on a journey across exotic landscapes to experience a dangerous cosmic adventure...

The dreamy “Restless” starts with a nervous drum pattern, then goes through many changes in rhythm and mood with classical inspired piano arpeggios and Latin guitar solos à la Santana, calm passages and a final surge of dark energy...

Kizaru” is a colourful piece with strong funky influences. The title refers to a character from the manga and anime One Piece, a Navy admiral who appears as a careless, absent and forgetful man, usually speaks in a very calm and composed manner and never gets upset, even when faced with problematic situations, in which he often feigns fear or amazement in a sarcastic way...

Hoketi Poketi” begins with funky bass lines in the forefront that conjure up the funny magic of a 1963 animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney, The Sword In The Stone, and that seems to depict a very strange way of packing your bags for a fantastic trip to unknown realms...

Red Sky” begins with a dreamy piano pattern soon submerged by a threatening rhythm and dark atmospheres. When the storm calms down an almost romantic section follows, classically inspired, that leads to a new dawn full of hope and good intentions...

On the whole, an interesting work that deserves a try.

ARRIVAL AND RESTART

Moto Perpetuo began life in 1996 in Gallarate, a town in the province of Varese, Lombardia. They were mainly inspired by artists such as Chuck Corea, Pat Metheney, Yellowjackests or Weather Report and the name of the band refers to their ever changing attitude in mixing jazz, rock and classical music with their own creativity and sensitivity. After many years of live activity on the local scene and two self released works that went almost unnoticed, in 2023 they self-released an excellent album entitled Untitled with a consolidated line up featuring Alessandro Lualdi (piano, keyboards), Orazio Martino (guitars), Costantino Corbetta (bass) and Roberto Ragazzo (drums) plus the guest Matilde Lualdi (violin). According to the band, this is a small point of arrival and restart, a book with a question mark on the cover whose content is left to the imagination of those who will listen to...

The lively opener “Gasoline” takes you on a ride across American deserts and open landscapes full of vitality and positive energy while the following “Clave Surprise” is calmer and darker, with classical inspired piano passages and dreamy atmospheres preluding to unexpected changes...

J.J. Blues” starts with the electric guitar in the forefront. There are some excellent organ passages, the rhythm is relaxed and takes you away, along a blue line for mystic miles... Then it’s the turn of “Lonely Walk” that, according to the band, would be an ideal background for a solitary walk to let off some steam...

The delicate “Irish Lullaby” is an excellent piece that features the guest Matilde Lualdi on violin and was inspired by Irish landscapes, Mother Nature and the strength of stability of maternal feelings... Then comes “Operation: Suitcase”, a piece that could describe the feeling of nervous expectation that you can experience before taking off for a holiday on a far exotic paradise, when you have just to focus on the content of your suitcase savouring the sense of freedom that’s going to come...

Grain” has the soft, steady step of a pink panther while “Joint Point” is a lively track whose title evokes a point of union and communion. Funky rhythms and organ parts that could recall Jimmy Smith... Next comes “N.B.F.” whose title could be an acronym for Natural Born Fifteen or, if you prefer, Nervous Breakdown Fever. It’s a track that, according to the band, was inspired by a wild, odd teenager, combative and idealistic...

Untitled”, the title track ends the album leaving to the listener the task to set his imagination free to give form to the images that notes suggest. It begins by a calm piano pattern, then goes through many changes as to evoke the different scenes of a beautiful dream...

On the whole, a very good work that it’s really worth listening to.

AMONG US

Hailing from Milan, Cinema Styge took recently form on the initiative of Gianluca Bonelli (vocals, guitar) and Stefano Sabbatino (bass) later joined by Luca Montone (drums, percussion) and Andrea Gobbo (piano, organ, synthesizers). All the members of the band share the same passion for the prog scene of the seventies, passion that is reflected in the original material they compose and perform. In 2023 the band self-released an interesting debut album, entitled Tra di noi (Among us), where they mix vintage sounds and the freshness of their own musical ideas. In my opinion, to appreciate this work you have to step into the art cover like Alice going through the looking-glass and plunge into the dark landscapes of an unsettling dream where nothing stays steady...

The complex, excellent opener “Si sa mai che” (You never know what) takes you on the banks of an infernal river for a surreal quest to the tree of evil, a monstrous, threatening weeping willow. Once found the tree, the protagonists will have to struggle to cut it down and let it sink into the waters of the Styx...

On the following “Rivelazione” (Revelation) we can hear the voice of the immortal tree that’s desperately shaking its thousand branches and fronds and looks for a way out from the damnation of the eternal flames of hell. Then the music and lyrics evoke the images of souls lost in the waters of a raging river of pain and a desperate desire to escape from a dream that’s turning into a nightmare...

“Come allora” (Like then) starts softly as the music and lyrics bring us unpleasant reminders of a grim memory. The borders between life and death seam to get blurred while love burns and wears your body out, your pride bends reaching the breaking point and the need to hang on reality fades out leading to the short instrumental “Esme”...

Another short instrumental, “Cosmofobia, Part I”, introduces the acoustic, melancholic “Spettro del profeta” (Prophet’s spectre) where the music and lyrics conjure up images of melting glaciers and raging waves on the sea while flames of madness lighten the darkness to give voice to an infernal cosmic silence... The rhythm rises with the following “Cosmofobia, Part II”, a piece evoking new horizons and the charm of unknown territories to explore in a new dream...

“Bus Carillon” ends the album taking you on a kind of dark, psychedelic trip across an ocean of stars in a magic bus where freedom dances at the rhythm of a strange carillon. Eventually shadows melt and you get lost in the sky, far away from planet earth and reality...

On the whole, a very good work that deserves a try.

Cinema Styge: Tra di noi (2023). Other opinions:
Jim Russell: This is music that is robust adventurism wrapped in a classic prog comfort-sound cloak with moments of beautiful melancholy as well. I'm impressed with the vocals that are expressive and emotive without being over the top, and I really love the vibe of the songwriting (and playing) more than any specifics I'm able to articulate. I hope this is but the first chapter of many for these guys, but if they end up being a "one-off," then their attempt at conjuring an alluring "album for the ages" was fruitful... METROPOLITAN MADNESS

Appartenenza is the second album by Milanese prog band Macchina Pneumatica and was released in 2022 on the independent Black Widow Records label with a confirmed line up featuring Raffaele Gigliotti (lead vocals, backing vocals, guitars), Carlo Fiore (synth, Hammond, electric and acoustic piano, backing vocals), Carlo Giustiniani (bass, backing vocals) and Vincenzo Vitagliano (drums) plus the guest and co-producer Alberto Ravasini (former member of historic Italian prog band Maxophone - backing vocals). The new album reflects all the good qualities of its predecessor with its excellent mix of vintage sounds and original ideas. The colourful art work by Beatrice Traversin probably describes the musical and lyrical content better than my all words...

The raging opener “Appartenenza” (Belonging) conjures up a dark atmosphere with heavy electric guitar riffs and powerful organ passages. The music and lyrics evoke a dystopic society where different groups of humans act like packs of wolves avoiding to mix with each other. Whites with whites, blacks with blacks, reds with reds, that’s the way to preserve their spawn...

The nightmarish, bluesy “Pazzo” (Mad) gives voice to an outcast, a stranger in his own home city who is going through a personal crises and is sinking in a sea of doubts. He can’t find a way out and is rejected by the conformist people who look at him like at an old king who has lost his crown and now is useless and helpless. He can feel the contempt of the straight against the different and that’s driving him insane. Then a kind of nursery rhyme sung in German leads to the disquieting finale...

“Fuoco d’agosto” (August fire) tells in music and words of a desperate story of alienation. In August, in an empty city, a lonely boy sets himself on fire as a consequence of his inner desert. He’s alone in his room with his television and his mobile phone when calls a live television broadcast announcing his self-immolation. In a few moments his naked skin burns under the summer sun and on all the TV screens...

The long, hypnotic instrumental “Il cerchio” (The circle) is an excellent track that leads to the following “Rendimento garantito” (Guaranteed performance), a disquieting piece about human commodification and blind conformism. The lyrics evoke images of misleading elections, losers supported and comforted by analysts, old people crossing the streets without paying attention to the traffic, men queuing up to donate their blood to the pawnshop...

The last track, “Venerdì sera” (Friday evening), starts by a delicate piano introduction, then the rhythm rises while the music and lyrics depict the effort of the protagonist to escape from his daily grind evoking a dream of absolute freedom and excess, a dangerous plunge into the nightlife under a false name in search for fun and lust. The protagonist seems to get lost while devils and witches play with his thoughts and the border between virtual reality and real life melts...

On the whole, a very good work!
